Documents Required for a Personal Loan: Full Checklist

By the FundsForSure team ยท Updated 2 November 2026

For a personal loan you need your KYC documents (PAN and Aadhaar), recent bank statements, and proof of income: salary slips and Form 16 if you're salaried, or your latest ITR and business proof if you're self-employed. Below is the exact checklist FundsForSure uses for each type of applicant. It follows the strictest requirement among the lenders we checked, so one set of documents is accepted by all of them.

Lenders also need your PAN.

How lenders' checklists compare

Banks ask for slightly different things. FundsForSure's checklist covers the longest period each of them asks for:

HDFC BankLast 3 months (or 6-month passbook)2 latest salary slips or a current salary certificateLatest Form 16
ICICI BankLast 3 months, showing salary credits1 month's salary slipNot listed

Tips so your documents aren't sent back

  • No passwords: lenders can't open password-protected statements. Remove the password first (see the FAQ below).
  • Every page, every month: upload complete statements and three consecutive months of salary slips.
  • Readable photos: the whole document in frame, in good light, not blurred. PDF, JPG or PNG, up to 10 MB each.
  • Matching names: the name on your salary slips and bank statements should match your PAN card.

Frequently asked questions

Are PAN and Aadhaar mandatory for a personal loan?

Yes, in practice. ICICI Bank, for example, states that Aadhaar and PAN details are mandatory for applicants and co-applicants. FundsForSure asks for both, plus your PAN number for the credit check.

How many months of bank statements do I need?

Salaried applicants need the last 3 months of statements for every active account, showing your salary credits. Self-employed applicants need the last 6 months. Upload them without a password.

Can I get a personal loan without salary slips?

Some lenders accept a salary certificate instead (HDFC Bank lists it as an option). FundsForSure asks salaried applicants for their last 3 months of salary slips, with no substitute, so that one set of documents is accepted by every lender we send your application to.

My bank statement PDF has a password. What should I do?

Open it with its password, choose Print, then Save as PDF, and upload the new file; it saves without the password. Or download the statement again from your bank's app without a password. Our upload page rejects password-protected files because lenders cannot open them.

Can I upload photos taken on my phone?

Yes. JPG and PNG photos are accepted, as well as PDFs, up to 10 MB per file. Photograph the whole page in good light; our upload page rejects photos that are too dark, blurry or small to read.

What do self-employed applicants need?

Your latest ITR, 6 months of bank statements, proof of your office or shop address, and proof that your business or practice has been running for 2 to 3 years, such as Udyam or GST registration or a professional registration certificate.
